Selling your car privately without scares: the right order of steps

Payments that evaporate, buyers who vanish with the car, fines arriving months later: the correct sequence for a private sale.

Selling privately gets a better price than a trade-in — and more risk if you do the steps in the wrong order. The golden rule: the car isn't handed over until the money is truly yours, and your liability doesn't end until the DGT knows you sold.

Money first — and real money

A transfer confirmed IN your account (not a screenshot, forgeable in a minute) or funds held by a trusted third party. Cash for large amounts has legal limits, physical risk and zero trail if things go wrong.

Same-day paperwork

Contract with date and TIME, two signed copies, and the notification of sale to the DGT that same day. It unlinks you from fines and taxes even if the buyer never completes the transfer.

Insurance right after

Tell your insurer with the contract in hand. Not one paid day of cover for someone else's car.

What not to accept

Verbal reservations without a deposit, “I’ll pay the rest next week” with the car already handed over, or buyers who can only meet in a hurry and in cash.

The frictionless alternative

At Autamo the right order is the only possible one: the buyer pays and the amount is held; the agency files the transfer; and you receive the full price — the buyer pays the fee — once ownership is confirmed. The steps cannot be shuffled because the system won’t allow it.
